Jenny’s letter 30th November

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we continue our journey through Advent — those precious weeks of waiting, watching, hoping and preparing for the coming of Christ. Advent is a gentle season in the church’s year: an invitation to quietness, prayer and reflection. And yet, if we are honest, most of us do not arrive in December feeling especially gentle or rested. We arrive carrying headlines, responsibilities, financial worries and the pressure of getting everything “ready” in time.

The recent UK budget has left many feeling uncertain. Some households may experience a little relief, but for many the cost of living continues to tighten around everyday life — heating, shopping, gift-giving, travel. For some this season is joyful and full of celebration; for others it highlights what is missing, awakens grief, or simply adds to the load of keeping everything going. Advent meets us not in perfection, but in honesty — in the reality of how life actually feels.

Here at St Barnabas we are also holding two things at once. Advent calls us to stillness and expectation, and yet we are surrounded by the beauty of our Christmas Tree Festival. The trees are stunning — each one prepared with love and imagination — and we are welcoming hundreds of visitors through our doors. And this matters. In a year of financial pressure and political uncertainty, the warmth, joy and hospitality of the Festival are a gift to our community. At the same time, the deeper meaning of Advent still holds us steady beneath all the activity.

Perhaps this is the heart of the season: God comes into the world as it really is. Not when everything feels peaceful or perfect, but when the world is messy, anxious and struggling. The birth of Jesus took place against a backdrop of taxation, travel, fear and political pressure — not so very different from our own age.

And so we hold on to the hope spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.” — Isaiah 9:2 Advent says to the world: Hold on. The light is coming.

If you need a moment of stillness, especially after the busyness of the Christmas Fair, please do come to our Advent Carol Service on Saturday 29th November at 6.00pm with the Barnabas Consort. It will be a beautiful opportunity to rest in the presence of God, listen to exquisite music, and absorb the peace of the season among the glow of the Christmas trees.

Whether you are counting the days until Christmas with joy, or finding this time of year difficult, or holding both emotions together — you are welcome here. St Barnabas is a place of quiet for those who need space to breathe, and a place of celebration for those who need community and light. You do not have to feel a certain way to belong.

May the God who comes close in Jesus Christ steady our hearts, lighten our burdens, and fill our homes and our community with peace this Advent.

With love and prayers,
